GM issues Order Numbers sequentially as each order, whether for stock, for retail sold, or a pre-order is entered into the system. Order numbers are alphanumeric, always consist of six character with no more than two character numeric. This system has been used for decades, at least from the sixties I know for certain.
There is no way to look at a Order Number and determine if it is a pre-order or not. The issuing of the Order Number begins the process of assembling a vehicle and one of the last items produced, the Window Sticker, has the number somewhere on the sticker.
