The foam from a cannon is designed to dwell on the surface for a number of minutes to loosen soil.
Rinsing after dwell time removes as much dirt as possible before you actually touch the car, significantly reducing chances of wash induced micro marring.

The screen that causes the foaming will clog up with hard water deposits and soap deposits. It also helps to periodically run CLR through the cannon or gun.
You can buy replacement screens and O-rings for your cannon for $15.

Lots of good advice here for maintenance of your cannon.
