I've read about slow cranking when hot, but this is the next level after slow - no crank.
Opened the hood, let it cool and then it started. That's hot-soaked starter.
Possible remedies -
Heat shield, or better heat shield for starter.
Maybe your starter is a little weak, possible replacement
3rd gens actually got a little fan to blow on carbs after shut off. They boiled fuel and ran bad. Little fan from factory was created to cool and prevent hot-soak, it went on when key was off.
Bigger battery - not likely to fix it

I think you are right. I experience similar issues. I haven't got to the point where it wouldn't crank at all but I notice on cold start the starter turns over strong and fast but if I am running errands and have to keep stopping for short periods with a few frequent startups the starter will feel sluggish to turn over. However, like you mentioned if I let it sit for a while and cool it will cranks over fast. Battery is good.
