The rubber spill over is not a flaw it keeps the element in place to last the million miles, and yes it cuts down on flow area. I have not and don't know anybody that has used a green filter for years / decades. I can say all my rides going back to my 1969 Camaro Z/28 and my 1969 440 Dart all had K&N and that filter was on the car when I sold them, heck they still could be on today.
