Had 4 of them over 10 years of driving, a couple 100,000 miles, just left it in gear, it didn't matter and never an issue.

Thats a bad idea. You want the car in 1st or Reverse because if for some reason the car was trying to move it would also have to spin the engine over with it. So if you are putting the car in 2nd 3rd 4th or any higher gear you are only giving the wheels a smaller mechanical advantage to have to over come.
Think of it this way. If a person was pushing the car in first gear they would also have to push with enough force to spin the engine over. If the car is in 6th the engine wouldn't need to complete near as many revolutions to travel the same distance. So to get a car to roll when left in 6th gear, it would require a lot less force than if the car was in 1st gear.
