I never leave my car in gear. Hill or no hill. I've tested the parking brake on a steep ass hill facing up and down. short of someone hitting your car it is not moving.

Yes it can be bad to rest your hand on the shifter. It's not bushings that are the problem it's your shift forks. When you push/pull the car into a gear the shift fork applies the pressure to move it. If you rest your hand on the shifter with any amount of push or pull force you could be causing those shift forks to ride against the gear causing premature wear. Your mileage on this will drastically vary based on how hard your hand rests against the shifter.

Personally I rest my hand to the side of the shifter with my hand around the knob but with no pressure against it.
