I have a Samsung Note 5, I just plug it into a USB cable and once Android Auto pops up, I pull down the Notification bar and there's an option to "Exit Car Mode" which I click.

Then I open whatever app on my phone (usually Spotify) & start playing music and then on the Radio, make sure you click the Audio icon & then you'll press the button on the screen that's labeled, "Media" (i think that's the name).
