You don't technically need them for a track day, but if you are tracking and you do some freelance yard work off track and they have to tow the car out of a dangerous area, if you don't have one they will just put their hook anywhere regardless of if it will further damage the car and pull you out. With a functional hook like in the picture they can easily hook on there without further damaging the vehicle. (it makes it easier and safer for the tow operator too) I have front and back ones from ZL1 Addons for my 5th Gen and they are removable. So you install them for a track day and then take them off for daily driving.
