Yes, it will kill AFM but I'm pretty sure the AFM valves aren't closing after the motor starts up. It gets quieter because it comes off high idle. If it is the AFM valves closing its not in response to AFM because the car never goes into V4 mode at idle. I can confirm the car is no louder with the range device installed, I have one that we don't use because AFM in the LT1 works light years better than it did on the Gen 5 but when it was installed the car still quieted down as it came of high idle.
