Most car headliners will show a white carrier material at the edge because it's water jetted / die cut / pinched after forming. Flanging the actual carpet is a very costly process. GM could have add a upward flange to the liner so the carpet goes upward.

Think you might be dead on with not enough anchor points. After reading this thread earlier in the week, I checked out my headliner and, in my opinion, there are not enough clips holding the headliner up. They're spaced pretty far apart considering what they need to do. And none close enough to the edges to keep the material from eventually giving in to gravity and sagging.

I spend a lot of time taking apart and putting back together the interiors of various vehicles and while I've seen worse designs, I've definitly seen better.

If my liner starts to sag, I'm not gonna bother with the dealer. I'll just remove it, finish the edges myself and probably add some anchor points.
