I think the first few years will be successful with the hype of a pro sports team coming to the city. And I can understand your want to have one being that you live there. But the sport has to relate to the average Joe and have a good base at the grassroots level. Let's say for some reason basketball courts couldn't be cheaply constructed in Canada. No at home nets, no portable nets and no courts at school. There would be far less people interested in the game. Well in Vegas you can't make ice outside which limits the game to an arena.
Maybe you're a big NHL fan. That's great. But there are a lot more NHL fans being ignored with this decision. Quebec also has a new professional arena built.

Not sure why not being able to make ice outside is a big deal. Ducks, Kings, Stars, Hurricanes, Sharks, Lightning, Thrashers, to name a few, have the same issue as Las Vegas.
As for making money, I really don't know, no one does, as there has never been a professional team here. But sometimes, you have to start somewhere. I'm sure a team in Quebec would have done great, but for some reason, they chose Vegas. And like you said, they are all billionaires for a reason.
And no, I'm not a huge NHL fan. At least not since the 90's. Paul Koriya and Eric Lindros were my favorite during that time. With a new team here, I very well may get back into hockey. Plus, who wouldn't want to get out of the heat once in a while? lol
