What GM or Ford makes is irrelevant, it's the dealer who's losing money on some of these deals but guess what, THEY ARENT LOSING A DIME. If they are willing to throw money at you then that's great, take it but understand there are a lot of incentives dealers get based on overall sales, etc. That means what would appear to be a $1000 loss on your deal actually can make them 3 or 4 times as much when the dust settles.
For example, dealers work on sales quotas to qualify for holdback and sales bonuses. A few years ago a local dealer was 5 cars away from making their number with 3 days left in the quarter. They put out an advertisement in the local paper, $8000 off their most popular SUV which priced it $2000 under their net cost and $4000 lower than any other dealer in the country (it was a hot model in limited supply). They sold all 5 in one day, taking what would appear to be a $10000 loss. The bonus they qualified for was worth over $50000. Losing $10k actually made the dealership $40k.
