Ok we need to be more specific here. We keep saying GM is going after more profit per vehicle which isn't the whole story. They armrest trying to take the overall more profitable path which is more profit per vehicle but with enough sales that the profit is actually higher when you multiply it by the number of vehicles sold.
Hence selling fewer vehicles than that volume is planned to be is still a failure.
Total development costs and capital spread across fewer vehicles than planned quickly erodes the "more profit per vehicle on fewer sales" plan.
I also doubt very much GM actually has a plan for the Gen6 that actually sells fewer vehicles than the Gen5. But that we will never know.
