My C7 was M7. My SS is A8.
If you really really love driving a manual then go M6. But if you are relatively indifferent the A8 is really worth considering. It is so far ahead of the 4L60E we had back in the LS1 days. The adaptive capabilities are excellent and keep the shifts optimized as time goes on. The torque management implemented will go a long way to keeping the transmission alive. A lot of people think the torque management is a negative but it allows for very quick shifts while not tearing things up.
The cooling on the SS is excellent so that should not be a concern.
