It catches the oil that blows out through the PCV . If you ever replaced a PCV you may have noticed that it tends to be coated in oil which ends up being burnt carbon in the cylinders. With direct injection it tends to be more harmful because the injectors are no longer above the valve (previously the sprayed fuel took care of buildup on the valve). In between oil changes reviews have shown over an ounce of oil sitting in that can. It's better to have the oil in that can than back into your cylinders!
