By time I finished catching up on last week's Walking Dead/Talking Dead it was already 30 minutes into last nights episode. For over the first half I was skipping commercials and didn't notices they were longer than normal.

I think the reason this episode got the cast worked up is the fact that one of them won't have a job this fall, and like you said it seems as though the victim wasn't/isn't decided yet.
