Just set the mirrors correctly. Besides mirrors I just have to check right next to the car real quick. Honestly I don't even notice if the monitor is lit up or not most of the time. I always drive to get myself in an area with no cars around me. Not always possible obviously, but a high percentage of the time I can find a spot with plenty of cushion in case someone does something stupid.
