The problem is that if they were actually really knowledgable about electronics and circuitry, they would likely not be a car mechanic in the first place and would seek a higher level profession. Most can only hook your car up to a diagnostic machine to test the battery and alternator, and that's the limit of their ability. If it's a bad contact to ground or anything other than the battery or alternator failing, you're screwed. Hypothetically if it wasn't under warranty, they can keep your car for multiple days at thousands of dollars of man hours. It's not unheard of.
