Seriously though, you're probably OK up to redline or even a little over. It's when you zing it well past redline that you're in for trouble.
You know, I've often wondered in this day of rev matching, hill assist, and solenoid lockouts, why not put a lockout on each gate and simply lock out the ones that would result in an over-rev based on your current speed? Seems like that'd be an easy thing to do! I realize there could be times when you want to pre-shift into a gear while slowing so you'll be ready to release the clutch at the lower speed, but it could at least be an option.
