It won't necessarily be a bad engine. Its just hard to make a V8 that is, overall, a better engine than a Chevy small block.

Sounds like a ridiculous strategy, but then again GM knows best.
Well, when you put it that way ... it kinda sounds like the perfect way snag people who have been bouncing between the various German luxury cars. And there are a lot of people that bounce between the various German luxury brands.

My gut tells me LT4, but my heart wants it to be a NA engine. In my own imagination, I've conceived of an engine that would fit. Make an LT series engine as large as feasible without resorting to some of the special trickery that had to be done on the LS7. Probably end up around 6.7L. Then design it with a redline at or slightly above what was accomplished with the LS7. Lastly, go as aggressively as possible with the cam profile while staying emissions legal. By my figurin' an engine that fits that concept should be good for 540ish hp & 500 or so ft-lbs.

To help keep costs down, offer it in Corvettes too. Kind of as a midpoint between the LT1 & LT4, either as a stand alone option or as part of a mid-model (maybe a Grand Sport?). It could even be rejiggered as a HD truck engine too. Trade some RPMs and power for more low end torque & durability, and now there is a nice step up from the 400ish hp gasser.

Its fun to dream sometimes ...
