Safety and cost would be my guess. If they wanted to have an auto close function they would have to have sensors in place to detect an obstruction (like a child's head for instance) and that would add to the cost. Also what happens if the sensor fails and a kid or animal gets injured because of that failure? But like mentioned earlier, it looks like there's a law in place to prevent auto manufactures from using an auto close function.
