I always sell my cars privately but, I always have the pink slip. Does it cause a problem selling a car that you don't technically own?

Checking the blue book on my car it's worth $10k and the trade in value is $7k. I plan to sell my car privately as soon as my camaro is built and being shipped. That should give me a couple weeks to sell my car and if necessary I can rent a car for a week or two and still be ahead over the trade in value.
Out here in Chicago the 9.5% tax is a pretty big incentive to try and trade in...unfortunately the dealers know it too, but every time I've bought new, we eventually come to an agreement where it works out better for me to trade.

I'll be doing the same thing with my VW GTI. Could get 24k for it private, but the 22.5k from the dealer will work out better for me tax wise.
