If GM is treating the 3.6 as an option, then no, it does not need unique identifiers any more than navigation does. The only option that gets unique identifiers is the RS package, and that's because it's an appearance package.
It matters because those of us who decided to get the more expensive and faster car with more options want to be different from the lower end models. It's like a exclusivity thing, we pay more so we want to be treated better to suppliment our investment.
