To me, MPG isn't that important over HP. I guess if you can afford a 35+ car, you can afford 3.00 - 3.50 a gallon (currently).

However, the A8 is quicker ET wise, lighter than the outgoing A6 (better mpg as well) and is more popular (and $$$). The only bad knock I've read on the A8 is it's not good for heavy track use (GM recommends the M7 for track use at least on the ZO6). That's related to cooling which might not affect the new Camaro because it might have better cooling. I guess we'll have to find out.

By track use do you mean drag strip or road course? I haven't heard anything negative yet about the A8.
