I don't know why people think this is an either/or situation. The number of cylinders has little to do with it. There is nothing inherent about a V6 design that will make a 3.8L version of it more efficient than a 3.8L V8. There are just some packaging considerations where a 90-degree V8 makes more sense than a 60-degree V6. There is plenty of room to put either in a truck, but some cars simply can't accommodate the height of a 60-degree engine or the width of a 90-degree (or DOHC) engine. I'm pretty sure Ford will keep all options open so they can stay competitive.
