matter of personal preference the remote has features that the controller does not have like frame by frame forwards or backwards (something I have enjoyed since the early days of DVD players) the batteries last a lot longer I have only had to replace the AA batteries in my remote 2 times in 6 years. plus my dad uses my PS3 and soon to be PS4 and he does not like having to use the controller to run the media apps like blu ray or DVD or netflix etc.
