Having spent a lot of time in New Mexico where traffic stops are far from "routine", I was taught a number of "best practices" to abide by when you get stopped.

1) Park the car and turn it off. It shows you have zero intention of taking off on them once they get out of their car. Helps put the police at ease.

2)Roll down both front windows at a minimum (especially if dark tinted).

3)Keep your hands on the steering wheel so they are visible as they approach.

4)Yes/No sir is a good way to keep it professional.

You'd be surprised how a little bit of manners can go a long way. Sorry OP - but you were being a smart ass and you were caught red handed with illegal tint. I'm not in law enforcement, but regardless, if people are being a smart ass to me, rest assured I will reciprocate. These guys did nothing less than that.

They weren't taking advantage of you with the original request to roll the window down. Many cops approach from the passenger side anyway for their safety (as to not get plowed by passing cars). A lot of them have a fellow officer listen in and observe anyway as it's protecting their butts if you decide to go to court. Two people stating the same thing versus 1 to 1.
