I have a question relating to locomotive headlights. It used to be that there was one (or two) headlights mounted high on the front of the engine. Around 5 years or so ago two more were added low and to the left and right, in a triangle fashion as viewed from the front. I have seen, occasionally, at a rail crossing where the front locomotive's two lower lights flash alternately when approaching, then change to solid when running down normal track. However, here in Minnesota, land of the BNSF and CP the front lights are solid at roadway crossings.

The question I have, is this a new safety mandate that is coming, or is this a railroad choice to use that capability? Or is it a passenger train feature, and passenger service is quite rare thru the twin cities, with one daily train that gets here around 10pm locally and I just don't see it in use.

In any case, what can you tell me about headlight operation?
The lights flash as soon at you blow the whistle, it is just too get your attention just like the wig wag lights on cops and ambulance. No idea why some don't it is supposed to be a fra law that they do.
