IMHO neither getting the parents/police involved, nor handling the situation with fighting back will work. If she fights back physically then she would need to make her win so overwhelming that the bullies would never even consider retaliation. (but then you have the possibility of the parents sueing) Or there's he parent/police method. The problem with this is if the kid does the 30 days community service but unless there is continious follow up the bully will most likely resent your granddaughter and retaliate physically or just emotionally (or both). The only way to really ensure that this type of behavior not only doesn't continue towards your granddaughter but anyone else is to make sure the parents are being proactive. Unless you can get the kids parents to stop this kind of behavior then the 30 days community service will not work long term, if at all.

Personally, in my childhood, if I had a problem it was resolved with fists. That doesn't mean it was resolved the best way but it was resolved nonetheless. The problem is now the parents fault for not being an actual parent.

Example: kid A bullies kid B. Kid B fights back and both kids get expelled or in trouble another way. Kid A bullies kid B, kid B does nothing back, it's kid B's fault. Or the more common situation; kid A bullies kid B, kid B fights back, Kid A's parents blame kid B for everything because they are too blinded to see that their kid is the one at fault.
