Apple can manage to produce one high quality aluminum casing phone, but producing two would have been more difficult.

Further, the 5c is said to replace the 5. The aluminum casing is more expensive than a similarly produced injection molded plastic case used for the 5c.

The 5s comes at a greater price point than the 5 or the 5c. Apple can justify equipping a premium price point 5s with an aluminum case.

Thus, both cost and ease of manufacturing are the reasons that the 5 was discontinued. Apple would have been required to produce two aluminum casing phones: the 5 and the 5s. This would have exacerbated the company's production capacity.
