Seems there are different stories as to how this went down. If they guy turned toward me, and I felt my life was in danger, absolutely, I would have done the same thing if it was me.
If the guy was just pulling out, driving away, etc....I personally would not have fired if I didn't feel my life was in danger...however, I support this guy and believe that that choice was his right to make.

I am very sorry you feel that way. If I were the DA, all I'd want to do with this guy is shake his hand. It is becoming more and more common to put the victim on trial, while at the same time giving all benefit of the doubt to repeat offenders who prey on the law abiding. That's a damn shame. At any other time in our history, no one would have debated the right to defend one's private property. It was universally understood, and quite frankly, we were safer and more secure for it.
