The corvair was later proven in a government investigation just as safe or even safer as any other small car of the same time period.
Although many still persist in the myth the Corvair was discontinued because of safety it was not. It is Ironic because it was driven out of the market by the Ford Mustang, that was cheaper to produce and had better performance. Which turned out to be more dangerous than the Corvair was.

Pintos were the same way and had no bulkhead either between the trunk and passenger compartment.

Many GM cars of the same era had their gas tanks in the same location but they were under the trunk floor therefore not as much a safety hazard.
