How does spending money make more sense than not? He's 21. There's better things to spend money on. Mostly all that gas money he'll be spending in applying to departments if he wants to be in law enforcement.

But I own 5 firearms with more coming. I enjoy them. Even if I was going to eventually become a cop I would still buy one.
Maybe its hard to find GOOD gun training in Commiefornia but in Louisiana we are falling over people that know what they are doing. Anyone can get a handgun and be taught how to properly, safely, and effectively operate it with minimal investment, typically under $200, usually in the $150 range, for a several hour, one on one course. Typically with a state certified instructor. Generally these guys shoot competition on the side and offer concealed handgun courses.
As for the expense, I consider it and investment. Thankfully I have a decent enough job that I can buy a toy now and then.
