I only get my nails done because I'm a horrible nail biter. If I didn't have acrylics, my fingers would be bloody stumps. I do hear ya on the pain, though. Once, I hit my pinky on my steering wheel really hard. The acrylic didn't break or come off, instead, it ripped my nail back almost all the way off.
I had to go get a nerve block at the doctor and have them take the acrylic off to see how much damage there was. The doc said she had never had to play manicurist before. Luckily, the nail didn't come all the way off! It took about 4 months to grow back completely attached again.
