I recently built a computer this past weekend. It's been about 3-4 years since I built a computer from the ground up, and that was when the Intel 6600 was a "fast" CPU!
My main reason for building a new desktop was for media editing, and possibly gaming (although I never have any time!).
Anyways, these are the parts I decided to go with:
Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G45 w/ 1155 socket
CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 Quad-Core Desktop Processor
Memory: Corsair XMS 32GB DDR3
Graphics Card: Sapphire Radeon HF 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 (OC Edition)
Hard Drive: Patriot 120GB SSD, Western Digital 1TB
Power Supply: Rosewill 850W
I'm really happy with the performance so far. At first I installed Win7 on the WD 1TB HDD, but after reading more, I decided to get a SSD for programs and the Win7 files, it should increase boot time a bunch. Not sure if I'm going to get any games right now, but I'm excited to see what the graphics card can hanlde, if it isn't enough for me, I can get a second 6950 for a pretty good price and run them together.
Here's a couple pics of the install
