O.K., out comes the fact-check.. The '99 Cobra did not make less power than the GT, that's not true. What's true is that it didn't make any MORE power than the 305hp version of the 4.6 Cobra it replaced. The primary culprit was a restrictive bend in the exhaust done by Ford's supplier AFTER they had published their power rating.
Embarrassing? Certainly. But holy cow, we could go on FOREVER about embarrassing moments, such as back in the 80's when GM was having to repaint all their damn cars under warranty...
Or my favorite was when GM couldn't come up with a solution to cure the fuel percolation issue in my 5.0 H.O. 1985 IROC (all of the 305 H.O.'s had the problem), but since they were relatively low-production, after 4-5 failed attempts, I got a letter from district that said "sorry, we can't fix it", and was sent down the road...
We could pick these fights like a bunch of 6-year-old IDIOTS endlessly...
