HOT ROD Magazine verifies GT500's 650HP

The March issue of HOT ROD magazine did a large write up on the 5.8 S/C GT500 engine. Certification testing was being conducted and they ran the engine for 250 hours at 6250 RPM. Included were pictures of the dyno test showing the 650HP reached. It also made 670HP at the engine's redline of 7000 RPM. It's max torque comes in at a very low 2000 RPM. Whether you are a Chevy fan or a Ford fan, you have to be impressed that Ford is able to make this kind of horsepower and still avoid the Gas Guzzler Tax. How well the GT500 is able to handle all of this new found power is a totally different can of worms. But for those of us that questioned whether the 650HP number was legit, it does appear to be so for the moment. I still believe the ZL1 will be a much better car all around but whether it can take the GT500 in a straight line remains to be seen.
