Yes, Ford and many other manufacturers release MY vehicles the year prior. They have done it long before I was my father's ham sandwich.

Basically I have heard 2 explanations. 1. Vehicles get released earlier than their year so that the new car buyer can have the experience of owning a car throughout the named year. This also has the added benefit of allowing them to sit on lots and still be considered new one year after they were built. 2. Auto manufacturer model years start late in the year to capture ad time for sweeps. That has progressed all the way to the Super Bowl, which is in January. So now a car company can market a 2013 vehicle in the next Super Bowl.

At the end of the day though, it's just a name. If a 2012 car from one manufacturer is built at the same time as another manufacturers 2013, they are equivalent in technology. It's not like Ford took a time machine to the future to cheat GM. It's all the same regardless of what year they want to tag on the front of it.
