I dont know why they even bother spending tens maybe hundreds of millions developing these engines only for them to get the axe once completed. Most automakers already have small diesels in the non-US models.

There are different emissions standards & fuel taxes in other markets. So while smaller diesels may not be viable in the US, they could still enjoy popularity Europe, South America, or elsewhere. One little hickup for this engine is that V8s aren't terribly popular in most other markets. It seems almost as if it were being designed specifically for half ton pickups, which are practically exclusive to North America. So without a domestic business case for it or a global business case for it ... GM kinda runs out of options on where they could sell them in enough volume to justify all the tooling needed to build them.
