Helps being a registered operator on the company's insurance.. can't have pops cop out on me driving the Silverado. Granted, I'd rather pick up a GMT-400 2500HD with a 6.5 Diesel or a CUCV with a 6.2 Diesel.

no... you dont.
well, you might, but you dont.
the early 6.2's were made with gasoline blocks and both series of the engines, while good for average power, are not capable (without major rework) of creating numbers matching stock output of current Duramax engines. not to mention, tuning capabilities (or lack thereof) and upgrades/mods that wont destroy the block are not cheap
they are stout motors, but there's better options.
Buddy of mine down in Chucktown has a 97 2500hd with a 6.5 turbo. its a decent truck, sucks on mileage, but pulls strongly enough for what it is.
biggest problem he's had with it was the crank pulley sliding off the crank shaft. bolt backed out on it and the pulley ripped the key and gouged the shaft before bouncing around inside the engine bay.
now the front axle has siezed up amongst other things. lol
but if you are looking for a dirt cheap diesel, get a 6.5 turbo.
if you are looking for a good truck to last you a while and have more options to upgrade down the road, get a Duramax.
