Owned a 229 for a number of years in .40. Loved that gun. Nice and easy to shoot. But I love my glocks and won't ever go back. (Unless it's Kimber

Since the death photos are not going to be released, we may never know. For all we truly know, they could have had MP5s, SCARS, HK416s, etc... However, a 9MM pistol will get the job done.
WARNING! THE FOLLOWING LINK CONTAINS GRAPHIC PHOTOGRAPHS OF DEAD PEOPLE! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
I just found this link:
http://www.reuters.com/subjects/bin-laden-compound
It shows dead men at the compound. I think it is the third one down that APPEARS to have been shot in the chin. I am pretty sure a 9MM round does not make that big of an entrance wound. This would be indicative of what the SEALs would have been carrying. Still, Bin Laden could have been shot with a 9MM while these guys were hit with rifles.
The large amounts of fluid loss in the first 3 indicate, to me, they were headshots. The 4th photo, I would say was a torso shot but can't rule out anything without knowing the size, shape, slope of the floor.
ETA: I just read on a gun website the rumor was a Colt CM901 in 7.62

Agree with everything here blake. Just highlighted the parts i really agree with. As ypu explained, the Human Head will "normally" contain 1 pistol round without too much deformation. It will not contain a rifle round... especially a .308.
I would assume that due to the nature of this particular mission, it was 7.62's. No reason to pack light when going in to do this kind of "job." But i also assume that they knew full well how many "bad guys" were inside and what they were up against too, so my opinion is purely speculation.
