This is the first time I didn't say something to the cop when he came up to my window. I usually say something like "what the hell are you pulling me over for" or "I wasn't doing a damn thing wrong."
I read somewhere that cops hate when you start giving them shit when they come to your window. I had a Highway Patrol tell me to show more respect, to which I thought "screw you, you tail light chaser." So this time I didn't say a word when he came to my window untill he spoke first. He asked me how I was doing and I told him that depends on what you are pulling me over for.
I thought you always had 24 hours to prove you have a drivers license. The police can find out if you have a valid driver's license in about 2 minutes so I can't see why they would fine you for not having it with you. Same w/ registration, they can run the plate and determine if the plate matches the car, what do they do with the registration?

I would venture to guess that being respectful in most situations will yield better results than not.

Basically the laws are written to keep people in line with the documentation that is needed in the car; license, registration, proof of insurance, ect. Most states I know of won't fine you if you don't have your documents but can present them within a fixed period of time. Consider this though, if you didn't have your license and couldn't supply your information for whatever reason, say you moved recently the officer could in theory put you in the clink.
