I agree with the internet ruining great times to be had in social situations by todays youth. I see so so many "txting" and on "FB", I mean, don't get me wrong, I am on "FB", though mostly everyone I am friends with I am related to or know in person. IDK 'bout the guy saying "dicks" get girls 'cos they just don't care. I don't think I'm a "dick" but I've always liked people and had fun interacting with them. Self confidence is a great virtue to develop, I've always been an outgoing expressive person though I've had shy friends that were less so when I'd just be obnoxious and give them reason to speak up or laugh out loud lol! (yes i just said "laugh out loud" with a LOL afterwards to drive home a point) Be yourself, others are always interested in you when you are yourself and have your own interests and personality you're not afraid to share. For example the OP is a swimmer, be that bro, if you like a particular type of music for example you can discuss that as one of your interests as well. Sharing your time with her and expressing your circumstances and interests shows her you're interested in her as well. Good luck bro, not to be a douche lol BUT just remember, even if she sais she's not interested, statistics are on your side, the more "cute" girls you approach, the more opportunity you have to find one (or more)with "like" interests that WILL want to spend time with you. Most women / girls love the direct approach and a guy with the ability to assert himself and use his self confidence. Good luck.
