Here's another thought...
Takes a little planning but might work to get her to give you her number instead of asking for it.
If possible go to one of her meets.... don't make a spectacle just watch and make sure she sees you there... Just give her a wave when she's free so she sees you.
Then she'll probably approach you there or at the next practice and you can get her number then.
Just know... she will have little doubt that you are interested in her.... so you kinda show your cards with this approach... but that's the point right.
EDIT:
almost forgot. I'd show up unannounced... Don't let on that you'll be there.... Again, this could be a lot of work, but if you want to get to that "friends" point first and take it slow this could be an option.
If it were me... I'd just ask for the number.
