Actually it was at track with a 3/4 mile straight away, so it was legal.

Yeah I wasn't aware of what it was, he told me that I was just about a few miles outside the 70 mph and it had gone down to 60 within the last few miles. Unfortunately I think I was too focused on the road and never saw the sign. My buddy who was in the passenger seat told me he never saw the 60mph speed limit.

I agree that "not knowing what the speed limit was" is not a legit excuse. Being that it was ~12:30 at night and I had already been driving on unfamilar roads for two hours out in the middle of no where, my eyes were glued to the street. Hardly having a moon and being the only car on the road there was hardly any light at all, I was more worried about making sure animals weren't on the road then looking down at my speed. Not to mention I had my speed warning set at 75mph so I know I was't going extremely fast.
