One of my favorites: But first a little history.... The complex I work at started being built in 2002, right when I got hired. I got to see the whole place built, from plain dirt, to a 4 story, 478 unit high end apartments. I was just a service tech back then, with ZERO experience with anything related to my job, other than being "handy".
In the beginning, the construction was slow, painful, and full of screwups. There were people moving in, yet the utility company hadnt installed gas/electric meters. Which means that we werent able to test any appliances, no hot water etc. Big BIG headaches...
About 2 months in, we had noticed we had major issues in every apartment with the phone lines. None of the jacks were terminated to the home run line (They werent connected in the closet). So we got the contractor to come back and fix all the apartments that were already released to us. It was also very common that At&t thought that the address didnt exist, and they wouldnt come out for the install.... Brand new streets mean that noone knows where the heck you are!! lol
The Story: I get a service request from someone that just moved in that their phone wasnt working. I figure, just another AT&T issue, or the contractor missed this unit. I first go down to the MPOE room, where all the phone lines enter the building, and test the line going to his apartment.... Its fine, got dial tone, and the phone number is the right one!! So then I go to the next "junction" between the MPOE and his apartment and tested it there.... Everything is FINE!
I then go up to the resident's apartment, knock on the door and the guy answers. "Hi, Im here to take a look at your phone" Sure come on in!"
I go in and take a quick peak in the closet, test the line, everything is PERFECT... All the jacks are connected properly.
Now mind you, this guy had NOTHING in his apartment yet... He was sitting on a folding chair, talking on his cell phone (Cell phones are a whole nother story!!) Thats when I realized.... Where the F@#$ is this guys phone?
"Excuse me, but where is your phone?"
"Oh I dont have one yet, my stuff hasnt arrived, I am waiting on the movers"
"OKAYYYYY... How do you know your phone doesnt work then?!"
"I dont know, I just wanted to make sure that it is working"
"Yep, everything checks out fine, you jsut need to plug in a phone and it will work, Have a good day!"
I left and walking back to the office, I could only laugh and say "Idiot!!" My lesson learned, was check to make sure they have a phone hooked up before checking all the other stuff FIRST!
I have seen EVERYTHING at this job and nothing really surprises me anymore. Its an adventure everyday!
