Engine hoist falls on 5-year-old Yelm-area boy

Medics were in the process of airlifting a 5-year-old boy to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital today after a 200-pound engine hoist fell on his stomach at an address in the 16000 block of Kalmia Court Southeast near Yelm.

The incident that injured the child occurred at 3:47 p.m. As of about 4:30 p.m., a helicopter was headed to the area of Yelm Middle School to meet the medics who had transported the injured boy there, said Southeast Thurston Fire Authority Chief Rita Hutcheson.

Hutcheson said the boy was complaining of "belly pain" and preliminary indications are that his injuries may be life-threatening.

Hutcheson said it appears that the incident was an accident, but sheriff's investigators will be called to the scene.
