Perhaps they did de-tune the 392 in fear of blowing the 5-speed transmission and getting less MPG out of the Challenger. The 8-speed I'm sure could handle the power as well as increase MPG, maybe enough to rid the Challenger of the gas guzzler tax.
However, I'm sure Chrysler is focused more on getting the small, fiat-based cars into the American market. That can be one of the explanations on why they put their flagship down on their priorities list.
