UT,
I understand your quandry... I got caught up int the "3 months salary for an engagement ring" debate about 6 months after I bought my first new car...... I was a young and broke private in the Army when I asked my wife to marry me with a $1200 ring that I financed for what seemed like an eternity.
Now, 16 years and 3 kids later, I've offered to get her a bigger, better diamond but she has absoultley refused to change what I got her. She still loves it, and says it would "cheapen the thought" if I bought her a replacement diamond for the engagemant ring.
I've since learned that i can add to her ring "bling" (ring band/guard w/diamonds) and keep my self respect while maintaining where we come from. Her wedding set is now worth well over $3000 and she bets compliments on it daily.
Suffice it to say, I knew from the begining that she wasn't about the bling, but a good, common sense, no BS woman, and that's what let me know she was the one for me.
I hope that's what you have found because it has been wonderful for me.
