It is a matter of experiences interpreted to fit expectations. People have been told all their lives that domestics are unreliable. They could own a foreign and domestic car, and both could have the exact same problem at the same time, mileage, etc (say a dead alternator at 100,000 miles). Because their expectations are that foreign cars are bullet proof and domestic cars are shoddy, the dead alternator on the foreign car is just a sign of the car getting older, maybe poor maintenance, or just plain weird bad luck. The bad alternator on the domestic car, on the other hand, is clearly a sign of poor quality. People DO NOT LIKE and in fact will avoid at all costs having their pre-conceived notions challenged. Instead, they will take reality and alter it in their minds to confirm their views.
